Description

Lake McDonald near Apgar Village Lodge within Glacier National Park just before sunrise.

Location

Lake McDonald, Montana

Background

Lake McDonald, on the western side of Glacier National Park, is the largest lake in the national park at over 10 miles long. The lake is known for its colorful rocks and beautiful mountain views. I had tried in June of 2022 to photograph sunrise at this lake, but sadly the weather was uncooperative and I was never able to capture a shot. In August of 2023, while exploring the parks of Banff and Jasper in Canada, we realized that Glacier was only a few hours drive, and one border crossing away. We booked a room for a few nights and decided it was worth another shot.

The first morning in Glacier, the skies were clear but lacked color and instead I focused my time of photographing mountain goats. The second morning, we arrived at blue hour with beautiful pink and red hues filling the skies accompanied by wispy clouds. We rushed to find a nice location to photograph and found the spot I had attempted the year prior. This time I would shoot vertically and try to position the one rock jutting out of the lake in the foreground. I captured this shot right as the light was starting to brighten and we were losing the red in the sky. We then packed up, and headed to find mountain goats.
